First-quarter 2018 grants, awards top $9M
The University of Mississippi Medical Center garnered 66 new, renewed and continuing grants and awards during January-March 2018, totaling $9,249,877.
The following faculty and administrators received the largest new grants and awards during the quarter. Dollar figures are shown as annual values.
Dr. Mildred Ridgway, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology, received $551,161 and $286,994 for two industry-sponsored research agreements.
Dr. Thomas Mosley, Hughes Chair of The MIND Center, received two subcontracts from the National Institutes of Health and Johns Hopkins University: $586,671 for the project, “Aging, Cognition and Hearing Evaluation in Elders (ACHIEVE) Randomized Trial,” and $65,490 for the project, “Quantifying Cardiovascular Calcification at Very Old Age for Personalized Risk Classification.” He also received a $92,156 subcontract from the NIH and Brigham and Women’s Hospital for the project, “Mapping the Progression to HFpEF in the Elderly Through Longitudinal Changes in Cardiac Function.”
Dr. Tony Wen, professor of obstetrics and gynecology, received $337,100 and $197,816 for two industry-sponsored research agreements.
Dr. Richard Roman, professor and chair of pharmacology and toxicology, received a $486,423 grant from the NIH for the project, “Genetic Determinants of Hypertension-induced Cerebral Vascular Dysfunction.”
Dr. Leandro Mena, professor and chair of population health science, received three subcontracts: $231,169 from the Mississippi State Department of Health and the Health Resources and Services Administration for the project, “Ryan White Part B Early Intervention Services;” $106,002 from the NIH and the University of North Carolina for the project, “The UNC/Emory Center for Innovative Technology (iTECH) Across the Prevention and Care Continuum;” and $105,130 from the NIH and Rhode Island Hospital for the project, “MyStyle: Online Family-based HIV Prevention for Non-heterosexual Black Adolescent Males in the South.”
Dr. Tearsanee Davis, director of clinical and advanced practice operations for the Center for Telehealth, received a $322,722 grant from the AARP Foundation from the project, “Remote Patient Monitoring.”
Dr. Jane Reckelhoff, professor and chair of cell and molecular biology, received a $321,301 subcontract from the NIH and the John B. Pierce Laboratory for the project, “Mechanisms of Hypertension in Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.”
Dr. Joshua Speed, assistant professor of physiology and biophysics, received a $249,000 grant from the NIH for the project, “Endothelin - Mechanisms in Hypertension and Obesity.”
Dr. Gailen Marshall, professor of medicine, received $213,848 for an industry-sponsored research agreement.
Dr. Bettina Beech, professor of population health science and dean of the John D. Bower School of Population Health, received a $146,510 grant from the Bower Foundation for the project, “Provider/faculty Burnout Study.”
Dr. Barbara Craft, professor of medicine, received $132,304 for an industry-sponsored research agreement.
Dr. Naznin Dixit, professor of pediatrics, received $109,490 for an industry-sponsored research agreement.
Dr. Amol Janorkar, professor of biomedical materials science, received a $100,000 grant from the United States Department of Agriculture for the project, “Preventative Drug Delivery Carriers Against Infectious Agents Detrimental to the Honey Bee.”
Dr. Laura Beauchamps, assistant professor of medicine, received a $93,500 subcontract from the HRSA and My Brother’s Keeper for the project, “Ryan White HIV Care and Services.”
Dr. Mark Anderson, assistant professor of neurology, received $57,100 for an industry-sponsored research agreement.
Dr. Binford Nash, associate professor of pediatrics, received a $39,237 subcontract from the NIH and the University of Alabama for the project, “Improving Retention in Care Among Postpartum HIV-infected Women in Mississippi.”
